In 1993 and 1994, the Centre for Christianity and the Arts at the Institute of Church History, University of Copenhagen, arranged symposia with liturgy and the arts of the Middle Ages as the uniting theme. Scholars with different professional backgrounds and from different European countries as well as from the United States of America presented papers of which 11 have been collected for this book.
Specific parts of the medieval Mass and particular liturgical subjects are the topics of some of the papers, while others deal with liturgy both as text and action in relation to the medieval drama, to poetry, visual arts and music.
The book is dedicated to late professor C. Clifford Flanigan, Indiana University, USA, who played a crucial role in establishing and organizing the first symposium.
