The Greek goddess Artemis and her Roman equivalent Diana constitute a multifaceted divinity. In Greek mythology she is the twin sister of Apollo and the virgin goddess who lives in the hills and the forests. She is potnia theron, the mistress of the animals, but she is also the goddess of child birth and fertility.

This volume contains a wide range of approaches to Artemis written by classical archaeologists, philologists and historians. Chronologically the topics range from the first mentioning of the goddess in the pre-historic sources, Homer and the Greek tragedies to Late Antiquity and the post-antique perception of the goddess. Several of the articles concentrate on regional aspects; others treat the iconography of the goddess as well as the role of her cult and the rituals in the sanctuaries both in the East and the West. Collectively, the contributions offer one of the most comprehensive studies to date of the goddess.

Den græske gudinde Artemis alias den romerske Diana er en gudinde med en kompleks natur. I den græske mytologi skildres Artemis som Apollons tvillingesøster, og som den jomfruelige gudinde der holder til i den frie natur. Hun er jagtens gudinde og Potnia Theron, de vilde dyrs herskerinde. Hendes kult kan antage en grusom karakter, og oprindeligt indgik menneskeofring muligvis som en del af kulten. Dette synes at stå i stærk kontrast til hendes rolle som gudinde for fødsel og frugtbarhed.

Bogen indeholder en række artikler skrevet af klassiske arkæologer, filologer og historikere. Emnerne spænder fra den første omtale af gudinden i de forhistoriske kilder, Homer og de græske tragedier frem til de sidste fremstillinger af gudinden i senantikken og i eftertiden. Flere artikler behandler regionale aspekter, og andre fokuserer på vigtige helligdomme og kultsteder for gudinden i øst og vest.

Foruden de mange bidrag om Artemis/Diana indeholder bogen en artikel om begravelsespraksis i Attika i 7.-6. årh. f.Kr., en oversigt over aktuelle danske arkæologiske studier ved Middelhavet og Sortehavet samt boganmeldelser.
