I dag stilles der store krav til, hvordan man bedst sikrer de håndskrifter og arkivalier, der opbevares i vores biblioteker, arkiver og andre samlinger.
De tilbagevendende internationale seminarer med titlen Care and conservation of manuscripts, som har fundet sted siden 1994 på Københavns Universitet og Det kongelige Bibliotek, har givet konservatorer, arkivarer, bibliotekarer og forskere, der arbejder med håndskriftmateriale, gode muligheder for at mødes og diskutere problemerne omkring sikringen af den skriftlige kulturarv for eftertiden.
Foredragene fra det 8. seminar i oktober 2003 foreligger nu i trykt form og behandler emner såsom dendrokronologisk bestemmelse af træbind, fremstilling af pergament, konservering af broderede bind, undersøgelse af materialer brugt til fastgørelse af farvelag i illuminerede håndskrifter, restaurering af varmeskadet pergament, udsmykning af håndskriftbind fra den ottomanske periode og det hertil benyttede værktøj, nye opskrifter til konservering af læder og pergament – og kodikologi og filologi.
Bogen er rigt llustreret og indeholder litteraturhenvisninger og et register over benyttede håndskrifter.

Much work is required to ensure the well-being of the manuscripts in the care of our libraries, archives and other collections and the regular seminars in Copenhagen provide a good opportunity for conservators, archivists, librarians and those who work with manuscripts to meet and discuss their problems.
The eighth seminar deals among other things with wooden bindings, the manufacture of parchment, the conservation of embroidered bindings, the study of paint layers, the restoration of heat-damage parchment, binding decoration and hand tools for Ottoman period manuscripts, biomonitering of rare books and documents, German stamped bindings, new recipes for the conservation of leather and parchment, as well as codicology and palæography.
The book is well illustrated and contains references and a list of manuscripts.
Dr. Gillian Fellows-Jensen is an associate professor in the Department of Name Research at the University of Copenhagen.
Peter Springborg, MA, is the director of The Arnamagnæan Institute (Old Norse Studies) at the University of Copenhagen.
