Kan man opfatte en koncert med Bob Dylan som en rituel begivenhed med et fast mønster af elementer? Som f.eks. når 'All Along the Watchtower' sædvanligvis spilles som den tredje sang i settet. Kan man derudover finde lighedstegn mellem en rockkoncert og et kirkeligt ritual af langt ældre oprindelse?
I dette særnummer af tidsskriftet TRANSFIGURATION undersøger forskere fra ind- og udland forholdet mellem performative offentlige begivenheder og religiøse rituelle højtideligheder, der stammer helt tilbage fra middelalderen.
Projektet er tværfagligt. Det spænder vidt over kronologi og genrer. I de 15 artikler dækkes bl.a. den religiøse billedkunst, teater, litteratur og musik, f.eks. Kurt Weill og Bertolt Brechts Das Berliner Requiem eller Bob Dylans koncerter. På den måde kædes forholdet mellem kunsthistorie og kristendommens historie sammen omkring titlens to begreber: Genrer og ritualer. Begge termer er brede og kan være svære at få hold på. Bogen belyser det komplekse forhold mellem de to begreber inden for den europæiske kulturhistorie og dermed middelalderens ritualers kulturelle arv.
Genre and Ritual blev planlagt på baggrund af den første årlige internationale konference på Danmarks Grundforskningsfonds Center for Studiet af Kulturarven fra Middelalderens Ritualer, Det Teologiske Fakultet, Københavns Universitet. Essayene er skrevet dels af centerets egne forskere, dels af kolleger fra universiteter i Danmark, Norge, Sverige, Tyskland og USA, som centeret samarbejder med.

The concepts of genre and ritual are central for the overall occupation with the relationship between the History of the Arts and the History of Christianity in Western Culture. In particular, these two concepts have important bearings for the research carried out at the Centre for the Study of the Cultural Heritage of Medieval Rituals (www.teol.ku.dk/kulturarv) which has been established at the Faculty of Theology at the University of Copenhagen through funding from The Danish National Research Foundation. The first of the annual conferences of the Centre was dedicated to the question of ritual and genre. The present volume was planned on the basis of this conference: a collection of 15 essays
with a wide range of topics both in terms of chronology and subject matter. The individual essays have been written partly by scholars at the Centre, partly by colleagues from universities in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, and the USA with which the Centre collaborates. The aim has been to publish a volume which in a facetted way sheds light on the complex relationship between the two broad and difficult terms, genre and ritual, within the cultural history of Europe. The book is a special issue of the journal TRANSFIGURATION (ISSN 1399-1353).
